4 FESTIVE RULES FOR HOLIDAY DECOR

Greetings fellow Home Goods lovers, knowing when to say ‘No!’ to holiday purchases can be a major struggle. With the limited amount of space in our homes, being smart with our purchases makes a lot of sense, but we know it’s easier said than done.

Here is a short list of items we’ve identified that are best left as a neutral participant in your home, and will save on space, as well as allowing you to use it year round. As tempting as these fun & festive purchases can be, our argument against buying these in holiday form goes as follows.

A) SPACE - There is a limit on space for most of us, and having a central location in your home, you can access them year round, without over-crowding with holiday themed duplicates.

B) QUALITY - You can now shop with less guilt and buy quality that you’d love to see on any occasion in your home.  These are visible not only at the holidays, but anytime of the year…(always quality over quantity…in many areas of life).

C) BLEND - The continuity this look brings to your home or party is gorgeous. It’s a wonderful way to blend your everyday look with your seasonal holiday decor!  Remember, you can always add some holiday ‘cheer’ to your table and platters with fresh pine sprigs and rosemary, cranberries, and homemade crafts your kids or grandkids make.

TAKE PAUSE;

  1. Cake Stands - Whether you’re a baker or a lover of baked goods, a beautiful cake stand is a must in any household. Having one on your counter is welcoming, and softens the room with the smell of sugar. We always recommend having one on hand, and leaving it out when you have sweets around. This is a piece that needs no holiday flair, because the yummy goodies you put on top is what will give it all the jazz it needs.

  2. Platters - It doesn’t matter if you’re serving homemade food or takeout, beautiful platters are always a good idea! Once again, the themed food is all your platter needs to give it some holiday cheer (time to break out those dusty wedding gifts!).

  3. Candle holders - Candles are life around here, and yet we still recommend being selective when you decide to bring just any old stand in your home. Find holders that look like your style, that you’re happy to put a red candle in at Christmas, a pink one at Valentine’s, or a pretty green one in the spring.

  4. Vases - Similarly to candle holders, we still recommend gorgeous vases that remain neutral for whatever the season brings. Cranberry sprigs and pine cones in the winter, followed by spring colors that have pinks, yellows and blues, and moving into the fall with the burnt oranges, soft yellows, and lots of greenery. Your vase should take you there!

  5. Greenery - Whether you like fresh or artificial, having a base greenery that you can add colors to allows you to use the same for many months of the year. Adding yellow craspedia balls in the spring and fall, or poinsettia florals at the holidays, it’s always great to start with a base greenery that can take you from one season to the next. If you’re into a more simple look, one of our favorites is a green eucalyptus wreath. This wreath welcomes all to your home, and can easily fit into any decor, any time of year.

Now that we’ve killed your shopping fun, let us throw in some holiday MUST HAVES that add the color, sparkle, and the cheer you need.

Go for it!

  1. Table clothes - This is one area we say go all out. Adding print and color to your kitchen table, dining room table, or even a runner on your coffee table is a big fat YES! In fact, this is a year-round rule of ours. It’s a simple way to soften any living area, and get the colors you just can’t achieve without a gorgeous textile.

  2. Blankets - Again, bringing out holiday themed blankets is a brilliant way to change the look of your room with minimal effort. If your everyday blankets don’t go, stash those in your linen cabinet and enjoy the look of plaids, cranberry colors, and fun holiday flair in minutes.

  3. Garlands - You want jazz? Look no further, holiday garlands are the way to get all the fun in your room! From vintage felt garlands, to decked out metallic ornament garlands, this is FUN! Buy something you wouldn’t normally choose (but of course, make sure you LOVE it!), and have fun expressing your wild side!

  4. Artificial Stems - Wait, I thought you said... Yes, we did list greenery on the don’t list, but, for holiday ease, we do recommend some POPS of color in vases throughout your home. So if that means glittered-out sprigs, or maybe red berries on a vine, these are a very good investment that you can use year after year throughout your home. These can be added to fresh greenery, or any other plants you may have around the house.

We hope you hear us (like a little angel whispering in your ear) giving you confidence to make good choices as you face the jungle we call holiday shopping! Also, blast this Christmas playlist - we promise it’ll be fun!
